Cardboard Chic: Free and Functional Home Design, Series 1

Cardboard Chic is meant to describe any repurposing of cardboard.  The great thing about using Cardboard Chic in your home design is that cardboard is free.  In addition to the big box stores, most dry packaged goods from your local grocery store come in cardboard-like boxes known as paperboard. These are still reusable in many ways. You can find more info here. The most important thing I learned was that oil and water can make it non recyclable... not good!

Repurposing cardboard is easy when you leave it in original box form, using duct tape to reinforce any areas that need it and trimming the height to your needs.  I have done this method for my DVD and VHS (yikes) collections, makeup and hair supplies and in my closet for out-of-season clothes.

If you want to make it look like you did not use cardboard, you can get some tissue paper and Elmer's glue and make a colorful design to fit in with your other decor.  You could use newspaper for a more industrial urban look, or some old wallpaper and really reuse your materials.

I personally have left mine undecorated because I'm very fuss free and just enjoy looking at my new storage ideas regardless of how they look.  Ahh, how easily I'm satisfied when it comes to organization!

And if you are looking for a small shelf, perhaps to hold some bathroom essentials or knickknacks you could take a box that you have, flip it upside down and voila!

I'm sure the ideas and uses are endless.  If you have any suggestions or ways you've gotten creative with being Cardboard Chic leave a comment below.  I will post some pictures of the examples later.  Stay tuned for Series 2 and other ways to be Cardboard Chic.
